Blogger Chat #3 - Instagram Fakeries

One thing I’m quite happy to voice my opinion about online is the current discussion around those who choose to fake their way through Instagram. If you’re familiar with the topic already you may have read In The Frows latest blog post (which is really fab) talking about how to spot fake followers and why this is damaging to the blogging community.

For me an authentic way to grow your Instagram audience is improving your content, working with/ tagging brands, using relevant hashtags and engaging with the community and your audience. It’s honest and still focused around what's important for me, fashion, lifestyle and blogging- the whole point of why we’re posting in the first place right?

If you’re using bots, apps or tactics that mean you’re gaining followers and likes from accounts that either aren’t real or are not interested in your posts they just want a like back, this isn’t growing an authentic audience. If a brand is paying you or giving you free products, that’s because they want to access your audience to promote their brand. At the very least you’re scamming companies by accepting payment or product based on a following count that isn’t legitimate or actually interested in you.

I managed the Influencer Outreach for a brand earlier this year and I’d say 85% of the bloggers & influencers that contacted me had fake followers. It’s quite easy to spot if your know what you’re looking for thanks to a combination of Social Blade, physically looking at their followers and who likes their posts and of course common sense, ever see an account where the posts aren’t that great and the followers/likes look suspiciously high? Have a look around their account and you’ll usually find it filled with heavily emoji’d blank accounts eventually.

I’ve know of people who’ll lie through their teeth and claim their following is real when you can quite clearly see otherwise, I saw one these ‘influencers’ scamming people on Depop, making fake listings and stealing hundreds from young girls online. The same people are now blacklisted from PR lists and companies refuse to work with (or even employ in one case)- says a lot really! There is always repercussions to your actions online.

I think people can become blinded by an easy answer to what they think success looks like. It’s not hard to become detached from reality, which is bloggers, PRs and brands talk about these things IRL. Creating content and using Instagram from the comfort of your home in private, it may not feel like you’re doing anything that wrong. The bottom line is, it’s lame and desperate (harsh I know, but there’s no point in me sugar coating it!).

I have huge respect and admiration for the ladies and gents I follow that work hard and grow honestly. You can see they’re innovative with their content, passionate about what they do and enjoy sharing what they create because that’s what motivates them.
If you want to grow your audience to share your content with more people then faking followers is never going to help you achieve this, if you want to a higher followers number because you think it makes you more valued, unfortunately only the opposite will happen.

Let me know your thoughts too, either below or over on my Instagram: @olivia_wh !

Life Update Wearing Organic Basics

Hi friends! I had the most beautiful parcel arrive today from OrganicBasics and I just really wanted to include the pieces in this post. They're a really cool brand that make sustainable basics that are also hella comfy. Plus their branding and packaging is so beautiful!

So onto the life update, I've made some changes recently I so excited out...

1. I've joined the gym, which is a pretty big deal as I've been very much 'yuk, exercise.. pass the red wine' for most of my life. Matt and I are going on holiday to Thailand in a few weeks and I'd just like to be a little more in shape for it.  So I'm now doing 4 HIIT classes a week and cardio most days (can you tell I don't do things by halves lol). Along with that I've cut out refined sugars and dairy for the moment too (note the soy milk coffee in the photos haha) and oh my god I feel so much better for it, a lot less bloated and just generally have so much more energy.

2. I have gone freelance! Blogging has been 50% of my work life since I graduated last year and the other half of the week I'm a social media manager, now freelance! It's kind of daunting not having a guaranteed salary but I love what I do and working freelance ticks all the boxes for me.

I'm really striving to live my best life at the moment and really push the content I'm creating. I'm always looking to improve what I'm putting out. For now I've got a blog redesign in the works and lots of exciting collaborations coming up!

A Bedroom Tour With Desenio

Long time no post! I'm so excited to be kicking things off again collaborating with one of my all time favourite interior brands! Desenio has been my go to for prints for some time now, they offer such a fab range for really affordable prices.

Over the moon to have upped my frame game with some new additions. I really wanted to focus on our bedroom, when I moved in with my boyfriend it was a real boys room (sorry Matt) but straight men really do have a tendency to like mismatched furniture and piles of clothes lying about. I'm now basically allowed free reign as long as I don't make it look 'too feminine' (come on men, embrace a lil dusty pink here and there huns).

One spot I really wanted to fill was above the bed. Before we had a tiny circle clock which was far too small for the wall space (blaming my boyfriend entirely for that decision). I was torn between having a gallery wall style or two big prints. As you can see, we went for the two big prints and then used the smaller prints on the picture shelf. I'm such a fan of the art and typography prints, they're super easy to place together. If you're struggling with matching prints Desenio have collections to suit any theme and they compliment each other beautifully.

I can't believe how much of a difference its made to the room, it feels so much more put together. Hanging artwork is usually something I put off or leave till last when decorating but the difference it makes is amazing!

If you're a long time reader of mine than you'll know I am ALL about value for money, it definitely ticks that box for me. Plus their Instagram is super cool too (@Desenio). Gold star to their stylists because you are doing a fabulous job.

The best news is I have a discount code if you're thinking of ordering some for yourself!

The code 'olivia_wh' gives you 25% off posters*
between 12th-14th of June.
*except for frames and handpicked/ collaboration posters.

Oh and here's the links to the posters I have...

Blogger Chat #2, 2018 Goals

The latter half of 2017 had some big changes for me, I had my final graduation from uni which after 4 years studying at LCF and 3 years before that studying fashion at college I felt really ready to move on. After finishing I took a few months off for myself, the first time in years with no deadlines! August, September & October I travelled alongside blogging and had a amazing end to 2017.

Since then I’ve been working for a fashion label in London (have a read of my get to know me post if you’re interested in what I actually do!). I’ve actually found that because I have less time to blog and create my own content, I have more motivation to really work and improve it. I always want to create interesting reads and images and do feel torn over the quality vs quantity battle.

Indoor pictures are quick and straight forward for me, but I don't feel they’re the most inspiring. I love finding a location that really puts an outfit into context. I’m trying to find a good balance of creating a weeks worth of content in two days, which means a lot of bribing of my family and friends to be photographer. I’m really trying to post what I would want to see rather than what’s easiest that day.
I feel like I’m getting to where I want to be with my content, I’m never 100% happy but I think thats kind of normal!

Matt and I are planning on moving later this year and having the opportunity to move anywhere is really liberating, It’ll 99% be back to London. I’ve thought about Manchester or even abroad, I’d love to live in Amsterdam or Stockholm for a little while.

So what are my goals for 2018…

  • I want to be constantly improving my blogging content. Always challenging myself and learning something to improve.
  • I want to move somewhere I feel inspires me. Plus Matt really wants a garden haha but I know that would be one more excuse to adopt a dog! (As much as I want to adopt all the dogs everyday I won’t be until my lifestyle would suit having one).
  • I’d love to do some freelance art direction. At the moment I’m really enjoying digital marketing and content creation so feel that would be the next organic step for me!

I wonder if my goals will change throughout the year! For now this is what I’m working towards day to day.

Thanks for reading! As always, message my on Instagram @olivia_wh if you want to chat about anything I’ve discussed in this post, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Underwear as Outerwear

With Valentines/ Galentines next week, Boohoo set me the challenge of styling up a piece of their lingerie in an 'underwear as outerwear' outfit, and I love putting posts together like this!

My first thought was lace body and high waisted jeans, but 1) it's freezing out, 2) I already own/wear outfits like that so wanted to try something a little different'. I picked out a simple (and super comfy) bra over a basic white tee, velvet trousers and black beret. I love a monochrome outfit, and always appreciate comfortable clothing too. Like these trousers! I don't think my photos do the velvet trousers enough justice but I'm loving them, also seriously lusting after the matching blazer, think that would be such a great combo!

Whether you're wearing your underwear over or under this Valentines I'm a big advocate for TREATING YO SELF. If you're looking for a lil treat (cause you is worth it chica) I've included my favourite lingerie picks from Boohoo too!

Get To Know Me

Two lovely ladies Georgia and Tami (@glameramo@tmbrxo) recently tagged me in the facts about you tag on Insta stories. So to get myself back into the blogging swing I thought I'd use the opportunity to put a lil post together! Here's me summed up in 10 random facts!

1. Although I've lived in Winchester for years I'm actually a northerner, I'm originally from Liverpool but sadly lost most of my accent (but not the sense of humour heh heh).

2. I have a super smart black lab called Pig, we adopted her off a lady who couldn't look after her anymore. She was enormously overweight and her real name is actually Cassie, we kept the name as she was 18 months when we got her (a little too old to change), but due to her very greedy nature she goes by Pig too haha!

3. I'm a horror junkie, both films and books, I'm totally obsessed. Silent Hill has always been one of my faves, but The Babadook, The Blair Witch Project & Pans Labyrinth are also in my top 5.

4. I've recently moved in with my boyfriend into his flat in Southampton, we've been together 2 years now. Surprisingly as much as I nag him for not managing to get his dirty clothes in the wash basket, we never argue. I think we've had about 2 arguments since we've been together. This is totally down to him being such a genuinely nice and chilled guy.

5. I'm a massive introvert. I love my own company and I don't think i've ever felt 'lonely' being on my own. Blogging is such a great way for us introverts to connect with other cool blogging gals and boys without being completely overwhelmed.

6. I can play the piano. Weirdly I come from a pretty musical family, myself, my parents and siblings can all play at least one instrument.

7. I have an enormous family. My Grandma (aka my favourite person in the world) is Irish so the list of cousins are endless.

8. I've been a vegetarian for 13 years, but I'm still a big foodie. I could eat Pizza & Mexican all day every day.

9. When I was younger my dream job was to 'be Lara Croft', I thought she was super badass!

10. Alongside blogging I work as a social media manager for a fashion label in London. I run the social medias, create content, manage influencer outreach, image retouching etc etc.
